Charrette Process Begins

What is a charrette?

A charrette is an intense, multi-day planning workshop where a broad range of people can collaborate to develop a vision for a defined area. Charrettes are organized to encourage the participation of all. That includes everyone who is interested in bringing the vision to reality: residents, property owners, developers, and local government. The charrette process provides a place to generate ideas and give immediate feedback to the City and consultant team. As a result, this dynamic and inclusive process can quickly identify and address obstacles. This process results in a feasible vision that represents the collective ideas of participants and the realities specific to the community. In Xenia, the Charrette was a three day process in February of 2024. The process included a walking tour, an opening and closing public presentation, open studio for the public to provide input at any time, and focused property owner and developer meetings.

A breakdown of the charrette process is featured on Page 11 of Chapter 1. Important aspects of a charrette include:

■ No Preconceived Outcomes: the design team comes into charrette process without a clear idea of the outcomes, allowing the community to drive the visioning.

■ Condensed Timeline: with just a four-day timeline to create design solutions and presentation drawings, the charrette team has to make quick and informed decisions that best reflect the interests and needs of the Xenia community.

■ Multiple Feedback Loops: Xenia residents were invited to check in and provide feedback. This allows the community to course-correct the design team and provide valuable place-specific insights. See diagram at top right for feedback loop process.
