Established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, or NEVI, provides nearly $5 billion to help states create a national network of 500,000 electric vehicle charging stations along designated alternative fuel corridors. North Carolina expects to receive up to $109 million to build electric vehicle infrastructure along its corridors.

Program Phases

Phase 1 - Build a network of fast charging stations along designated alternative fuel corridors to support regional travel. About 40 charging stations will be funded to be used throughout N.C.

Phase 2 – Build community level electric vehicle charging infrastructure to support electric vehicles in the state, particularly in disadvantaged communities.

The NEVI Program is structured to reimburse private companies up to 80 percent of the cost to construct and operate electric vehicle charging stations for a five-year period. After five years, the charging stations will continue to operate without government support.

The N.C. Department of Transportation submitted its Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment Plan in August 2023, to the U.S. Department of Transportation. This plan provides an overview of the goals and implementation for Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the NEVI Program. It also discusses the planning, construction and operation of electric vehicle charging stations, the federal Justice 40 Initiative and workforce development aspects of the program.

    TOO MANY EV STATIONS

I’m fed up with the proliferation of EV charging stations. It’s like they’re multiplying faster than rabbits! First, they disrupt the aesthetics of our neighborhoods. These bulky metal contraptions sprout up in parking lots, near parks, and even on street corners, ruining the view. Second, they’re often out of order or malfunctioning, causing frustration for EV owners who rely on them. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve pulled up to a station, only to find it “temporarily unavailable.” And don’t get me started on the traffic congestion caused by people queuing up to charge their cars. It’s... Continue reading

    Range Anxiety

The fear of being stranded without enough battery power, known as “range anxiety,” is a concern for those considering buying an EV. But with the growing number of charging stations, I can feel confident that they can access a reliable network of locations to recharge their vehicles quickly. As the charging infrastructure expands, the problem of range anxiety becomes less of a worry, making electric vehicle ownership more appealing to a wider range of people.
